What are you reading now?

Bilbo Baggins and gollum. My mother read the hobbit to me/us four times growing up (once in utero) and I have read it at least 4 on my own, plus twice to E. I think they are my favorite simply because I can hear my mom’s voice for each character in my mind. (Even watching the movie I substituted her voice.)

(Speaking of movies, how about the enormous part of leaving the shire that was left out of the film! It’s one of my favorite parts!)
Thats so lovely! <3 Im so glad it has such a special place in your family. Those are the best kind of books/movies. :happyhearts: E has a great mom!!
Neither of my parents were into Tolkien before I was. (I hope its okay with the mods if I explain how i came to read the books? <3) My first exposure to it was the Ralph Bakshi animated LOTR. My dad bought me the VHS and the ring wraiths scared me so bad haha its the sounds they made. Then later the LOTR Peter Jackson movies came out but I didnt have glasses. I remember the movies being played on my Dad's girlfriend's tv when they came out for rent but I couldnt see the tv from the couch so i looked at the carpet and daydreamed. The only part I recognized from the cartoon was Caradhras bc all the white snow I could actually see. (No one knew I couldnt see, and I thought everyone saw the same as me lol). Fast forward to highschool I met a friend who liked Tolkien so i finally properly watched the movies and I was hooked!! I asked my mom for the books and I LOVED them. My life has been consumed with tolkien ever since! :lolpony: My dad has never gotten into it, but like you and E, my mom and I are very close. Now she enjoys Tolkien because I do and she always quotes the movies and books with me on the daily haha. Im so happy with my little shelf of tolkien books and my wooden box of tolkien keepsakes. <3

I totally agree!! I understand why they left it out for time but I really wish they had left it in. At least they did briefly reference meeting the elves while they traveled in the extended editions. That was my favorite part in the first book! <3 I need to reread them sometime.
Ok first off, how did it take us so long to broach this topic? It’s a genius move!

@Tak “The Outsiders” is ok?! No no no! It’s the first book that broke my heart! It was the first book I threw against a wall! (It was an instinct, I’m sorry! I’d never purposely harm a book that way!) Anyway, it holds a special place in my heart and the movie makes me cry. Every. Single. Time.

@strawberrypony32 Ooh, “Captive Prince” sounds like it’s right up my ally! Political, wartime, royalty, enemies to lovers, LGBT, the works! Also, a recommendation if you like LGBT royalty: “Red, White, and Royal Blue” is a fantastic story! Low angst so sorry if that’s your thing… :D

As far as physical vs digital, sorry, I'm gonna have to go with digital. Easier to carry, takes up less space, fewer things for my kitty to pull off the shelf! Lol. But also because I read daily but usually stick to fan fiction. I have trouble letting go of characters I’ve already fallen for…so I don’t!
Oooo I have heard of Red, White, and Royal Blue!! :D my Bestie read it and I totally forgot! Ive got to put it on my list! Im definitely okay with low angst haha not everything needs to be angsty! ;) If you like the Genre then maybe Captive Prince is for you too! :D I do believe its a small series of books, but from what Ive heard it sounds so good!! Definitely for adults tho!
I too read a lot of fanfiction haha so I totally get what you mean! The story must go on, gatta read more about your favorites!! I also enjoy writing fanfiction myself!

Raptor Red

Crave (it’s ya so, pg-13, so please don’t look it up if you want pg)

I am now reading The Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard at a student's suggestion. It is a series, but I am not sure I will finish. Has anyone else read this?

All Out was a 4 star situation for me.

I’ve read the entire red queen series and the novellas. It’s a bit all over the place. I do think it ended well.

How many have finished the full Ender’s Game series?

Orson Scott Card is pretty darn homophobic. I don't want to give him money or space in my brain.

I honestly didn’t know that! Well, I didn’t give him money if that helps. I read all the originals my parents bought. Most pre-digital books I have read because my mother reads more than anyone I’ve ever met. Any other authors that should come with a warning? I won’t lie, I read the books, but rarely read about authors and almost never read any author’s notes. I’m Ace and (finally) diagnosed with ASD. I don’t always understand the intended inference in a book. I just take my own meaning.

I mean. it's tough. There are a lot of great artists out there who have disgusting worldviews. I won't be able to avoid all of them. Some creators that I used to really love, I have chosen to avoid now because I have a pretty weak stomach for it. There's a musical artist that I listened to regularly who now turns my stomach. I am literally sick when I hear his voice. Some folk make 'cancel' decisions that are purely intellectual. I do that too, but mostly I leave people behind because it makes me feel truly sick not to. Sometimes I definitely wish I could un-know what I know so that I could just enjoy them again, but, alas. If they feel strongly enough to be public and/or get 'caught' then I feel compelled to avoid them on principle.
That's just me though. I am not suggesting anyone else should follow suit.

I understand and agree. I’m going to pm, so as to get this thread back on track. I just read an Ilona Andrews novel that made me smile. I love magic and hap endings.

Ugh, aint that a mood. :sadpony: Always sucks... I do the same. I shant say whom so as not to get off topic (and we all probably know of said people) but trust me I feel you.

On a less disheartening note. Im not sure if you or anyone has many in their states but I would recommend looking up local or US compilation ghost story books! Theyre so wonderful and have pieces of history from each state, and you can even see similar stories from different states showing how word travels over the years. My state personally has a lot of local ghost story books.
My Gran collected them and back in the day would go to lots of libraries and find stories from states to connect them and organize them. She would copy them all with her typewriter then compile it all into binders. We have her entire shelf of ghost story books she collected over the years as well as her handmade ones and even managed to get one signed by an author for her!
Most of my books are for the southern states so I dont know if anyone would want those recommendations if not from there, maybe you could find some for yours? Not sure if theyre even anyones thing! Haha but if it is, theyre fun reads!

There are a TON for Chicago.

We have ghosts and Sasquatch. ;)

Plenty of books if you want specifics, there’s also a Halloween tour.

I started Ethics Without Principles last night, but I didn't get far. Kid and I both have a sinus something.

Sorry about the sinus trouble. That’s so rough when they’re little, too.
I’m looking up ethics without principles. Adding to the list!
(note: my library doesn’t own it yet, so I recommended it and it’s on hold ;) )

stay gold Ponyboy...

In other news, the outsiders is set in Tulsa, Oklahoma, which is where my family is from! I know lots of people who were extras in the movie.

And in response to the actual topic of the thread, I don't have time to read anything fun rn because all my reading energy is spent on my college classes. :(

That is so cool about your hometown!
(They shot Maverick and Tremors where I used to live and tryouts for extras were so fun!)
E is warming up to outsiders and I’m going to watch the movie. I didn’t know it was the brat pack. Sometimes I am so out of touch with the world. o_O
I’m reading ‘fox in socks’ again, a command performance for E.

I want to hear more about what people are reading.
And this thread is technically a little older than 6 months, but it seemed silly to do a whole new thread for a few weeks, so hopefully I won't get grumped at.

WHAT ARE YOU READING?

I just finished The Murderbot Diaries series, and I can't wait for the new one in November. They were amazing.

I’m re-reading (for the millionth time) BSC series. It’s one of my all time favourites and is an easy and relaxing before bed read for me.

I’m in the process of thinning our books down some and can’t decide what we can let go and what I want to keep. It’s so hard!

I actually just finished a little book that i read in like elementary school lol - i never read
