More Selective this Time Around?

Hey everypony, I've been curious to ask you all a question; I know when we were kids growing up with the G1s (or G2s, or G3s... however old you are I guess) we wanted ALL the ponies. So when the G3s came out, a lot of us went bonkers and bought them all. It seems like a lot are being sold off in the past 5 years, and even now there are tons for sale super cheap.

So, knowing this, I was wondering, are any of you being more selective in the ponies that you bring into your home with this new generation (G4/Friendship is Magic?) Or are you just along for the crazy, fun ride?

I for one am struggling with the excitement that stirs around new ponies (it's been years since we've had new characters and of course all the new body shapes, etc. is just totally overwhelming in addition to the new characters and colors and symbols!) Then, on the other hand, I don't have much room for new ponies despite their small stature, and I also don't have a lot of extra money.

So, in conclusion, are you doing anything to limit the amount of ponies that you'll purchase from this new line, or are you just letting it all wash over you and taking them all in in a flurry of excitement?

(Of course, bar the fact that barely any of them are in stores yet, talk about what you plan to do.) :945:

So far I've been fairly selective in my wishlist, and I've only bought 5 of the 6 main ponies. (Most of those were special treats to myself, like a Birthday gift, or a prize for reaching a goal. So I didn't just walk in, pick 5 ponies off the shelf and go, go go! like I used to in the G3 days. Well, that's not true, I only bought 4 ponies at once and that was only the one time. I guess I've always been fairly careful about new ponies.)

I want all of them. I really want to get know in Romania for my collection. :D

until i see then in the flesh as it were, i really don't know! i deffinatly want the big celestia and luna set... but thats the only one which is a must atm.... if i fall in love ill buy them.....

ive always been selective on what i collect... i dont like shs, flocked ponies, most baby ponies, sea ponys, and mer ponies.... i dont have any g2 at all, since i dont like them, and i dont have g3.5 at all!

I am picking and choosing. As with all of my collection, I'm trying to get just the ones I absolutely love (and not even all of those...we're getting ready to build a new house, so ponies can't really be a huge financial priority right now). For me, that makes my collection feel more special and "personalized." Plus, I never have to feel like the ponies are going to avalanche on my head. It allows me to display/keep track of them all and enjoy each one more.

Im definately being more selective. I just dont have the room for to many more ponies no matter how badly id like to collect them all. I guess if id choose just one thing to collect id have more room but i cant get rid of my breyers, grand champions, horse figurines in general and they take up alot of space that could be used for only ponies....

I am definitely being more choosy. But I have been like that since I started collecting again as an adult. I realize I don't have the money or space to collect them all and I just hate having doubles or semi-doubles (same pony different pose, etc.). This especially a problem with the G4 line and since it is so new, it is hard not to get doubles! So I am definitely choosy and that makes it so hard to wait when new ponies come out that you don't really want.

I get the ones from McDonalds. That's it. I won't go actively buy ponies from stores anymore. I'm just not interested in any of the generations aside from the first. The rest all look like fakies to me.

When it comes to the newest generation I'm not selective - I complete avoid. I don't like the new look. The G1s were cute and/or pretty and the G3s looked a lot like them. The new stuff is, to me, distorted and too stylized to be say My Little Pony to me. I guess I'm a purest.

Of course when it comes to G1s (and now the G3s) I'll take whatever I can. I did buy some G3s when they first came out, but restrained from going all out. Though I'm afraid my love for them is changing that. :)

After the first couple years of G3, I had to start being way more selective. For the G4s, all I bought so far is the first six singles, the storybook gift pack (that was a gift, really), and Applejack's Apple Barn and Fluttershy's Nursery. I see a few other singles I'd like...but to be honest, as much as I love the new series, I plan to keep it to a minimum. With the G3s, I just had way too many. No room to keep them all and it was starting to cost a lot of money -- it was making it so I couldn't pursue my other interests/hobbies, sadly. And I feel better with less clutter. And I enjoy the things I have more when I don't have a *ton* of everything.

Even now, I still have some G3s I want to get rid of to free up some space. I've really just resolved myself to collecting what's special to me. I really regret not doing that with the G3s when they first came out, because I have a lot I need to trim from my collection (and in all honesty, I only have about 110 G3s in total, it could be way worse).

I'm going to have to be more selective, definitely. I have WAY too many G3's I'm trying to get rid of and I don't want the G4's to be the same deal.

Besides, my first love will always be G1's. Especially variants!

I really don't care for G4 ponies. They don't look at all like the FIM characters. I have the first issue of each of the main characters but that will be it for me. I am not interested in collecting this line.

I totally agree. I am waiting to see what will be next. I am not fond of the look of the G4 line at all. I loved G3 but only buy a few here and there. I have a lot of them and hardly any doubles..now I only get my favorites as there just are not a whole lot left to purchase. I am mostly trying to get all the babies from the G3 line now. G3 was wonderful to me. G3.5 not so much, G2 not so much and G4..not so much...G1 Super. I was hoping they would re-release the sea ponies. Kids would love them. I don't get why they have not done it.

I would love to get them all, but I have a hard time justifying paying "new" prices for them. I know, in a year or so, I'll start seeing them in the thrift stores. I might pick up one or two new. So far, I have Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, the original set of 5 with molded hair, Easter Fluttershy (kept MIP) Ponyville Pinkie Pie (mip as well) and all of the McD's toys, (all but 2 found in thrift stores.) I can be very patient! I dunno... something about thrifting something up instead of paying full price just makes it more satisfying!

I used to be like "I only want the ponies that appel to myself" but now since this new fluttershy and new apple jack are out.. I think I will work to get the main 6 ponies, unlike when I bought G3s I went and got a ponie like every time I had the chance and bought the one that looked the best to me.

I love ponies and I would buy any pony if shes/hes cheap! but in stores they are so spendy.. and I dont have that much extra money to spend so I'll just work to buy the main ponies (with maybe derpy hooves if they release one! and of course Princess Luna!)

I already have rarity, fluttershy, and twilight sparkle. 3 or 5 more to go! (depending on derpy and luna!)

I haven't really decided yet for the most part. My older sister and I had at least 2/3 of the G1 line between us when we were younger, and I just don't think I could handle doing that again. With G1 I'm down to childhood favorites now, and some accessories that I managed not to lose.

With G4, I'm thinking about just getting the ones I like the best of the singles and then probably the fashion styles, and maybe some of the playsets (if I like them). But I'm not really sure if I'll stop there, even if I do not get all of them. I just broke down today, and bought my first of the G4s (I got Easter Fluttershy). I am definitely going to get one of the Luna/Celestia sets, and I'll probably collect all of the unicorns since they've always been my favorite.

I think it's really going to depend on how many G4 ponies end up being released. I was definitely trying to get all of the G3s, then I got so many of them so quickly that I really kind of got burned out on them and sold several last year for next to nothing (some of which I now regret getting rid of). As of right now I have every intention of trying to get all of the G4s, but I'm sure there will be some kind of limit. After all, my first love is G1 and I also have a very large Care Bear collection. Both of those sets take up quite a bit of my available display space.

Pony Plan

I only buy ponies who I feel a special connection with, the only ones I really love. For example, I bought Moonstone because I love astronomy, and I'm also trying to get Nightglider for the same reason. I only have a few G3s, most of which I got from a friend who was selling her collection. I want to get a G3.5 so I can customize it (or have someone else customize it for me), but I hate the G4s. I love FiM but the toys are so unlike the characters and, admittedly, the G1s are more my taste. If I do get a G4, it will probably be Princess Luna.

I am glad I am not the only one that feel this way! The G4s don't even look like ponies so I will stick with the older look. Especially when it comes to the sweeter eyes.
I do have way to many G3 multiples that I would like to get rid of so I can reclaim some space!

It's strange, you know. If I know that I can buy a certain pony in the stores, if I know it's going to be there for a while, I don't feel much of an urge to buy it. I've got four G4s so far, three McD G4s and a whole lot of blind bag ponies (most of them birthday presents). I will certainly get a few more (I'm especially tempted by the baby Celestia and Luna set), but I'm taking it slowly, only buying those I really want.
