Gingerbread's kitchen

Go for it @Glistening Rainlight I hope you liked them! I find recipes anywhere and everywhere! I read cookbooks like people read novels and sometimes I just come up with my own things. I didn't do as much baking as usual this year but once the christmas dust settles I'll be sure to share some pics :)
Thank you! I meant to get back to this sooner - there was a mishap with the cinnamon pie and it got badly burned. I was going to try to redo it, but got caught up in things and forgot. Honestly it was a real shame, I was really looking forward to trying that one. ouo I'll probably try it again another time!

At least there's the blueberry pie!

It's not the world's greatest to look at, I think this one got slightly scorched as well, but not bad enough to harm it. I definitely got a bit more than I could handle with this one! It was so sweet, I expected it to be sweet but it was well and above what I'd expected! I don't have quite that much of a sweet tooth, but I was happy to get to share it around!

That said, I had a taste of the filling while I was making it... I was so shocked! It reminded me strongly of a fruits, bananas, and yogurt recipe I like, I didn't expect to find that taste in those ingredients at all. It was really yummy. I'm always the person who's loved eating the batter more than the finished product anyway, so I guess it makes sense.

This definitely showed me that I've got some learning to do haha, but I definitely enjoyed making them. Thank you again for sharing your recipes! Even And for sharing a little bit on how you get them C:

Well pony friends I got a different kind of kitchen share for you today.

Some might look and say, wow, those are some shiny kitchen floors...

until you look closer...

yep, my house flooded :seawinkle::waved::sealight::seapony: I woke up Wed morning planning to get ready for work just like any other day but when I walked out of the bedroom I stepped on wet carpet. In my barely awake state I thought, "Frank? he's been gone 3 years" (that was my last doggo) then the more steps I took to get away from the cold wet, the more squishy and wet it was! I started turning on lights and shouted to my husband to wake up.

Apparently sometime overnight our hot water tank had a rupture and it's in a big closet between the living room and kitchen. My living room and dining room are carpeted and they were soaked and my kitchen and laundry room had about and inch or so of standing water. Ugh, what a mess!

Called our homeowners and water mitigation crew was at the house about 10 a.m. but it's a disaster zone throughout my house. All the stuff that was in those rooms and closets has been piled up in my pony room, our bedroom and our other spare room. They ripped up all the baseboards throughout those rooms, tore all the bases of my kitchen cabinets out, they had to pull my oven, dishwasher and big ol' refrigerator into the middle of the kitchen to get around to everything. There are a dozen industrial blower fans and a couple giant dehumidifiers with cords and hoses going everywhere. They are so loud and they've been going since Wed afternoon, non stop  the carpet has been ripped up but not removed cause the insurance guy has to come inspect everything before it can be thrown out and restoration proceeds. So that's also laying across the floor trying to trip you up if the cords don't getcha

IMG_9802.JPG IMG_9803.JPG

Hopefully when the crime scene guys come back tomorrow they will take all these fans and humidifiers with them! I shudder to think what my electric (and water) bill will be next month! It's so many going we have been having to be very cautious what we plug in and use cause we've tripped the breakers twice already. Plus, they make it SO HOT in the house, my thermostat has been saying it's been about 82-85 in my house since they turned all the dryers on. And don't get me started on all the dust, wood and carpet fibers blown everywhere, it's almost as bad as drywall dust and it's on everything! There was old wood flooring under the carpet apparently and that had to be torn up too. The insurance guy comes Thurs so hopefully we can get the ball rolling on new floors and restoration next week!

I keep reminding myself all the ways it could've been worse, and it really could've. At least it wasn't in the pony room, or our bedroom (our only safe room at the moment) and nothing aside from our floors was ruined. Any stuff that got wet wasn't bad enough we weren't able to just dry it but Gingerbread's kitchen has been outta commission and might be for a little while! You guys will have to share your fun, delicious kitchen experiments to hold me over til I can really get cookin' again!

What an awful mess! Thank goodness it was clean water and not.. unclean water.. Do you live in a climate where it will dry out fast? I wish you didn't have to deal with this, but maybe you'll have nice fresh flooring once it's all reconstructed and the dust cleaned? LIke Beth said, hang in there!

Oh no! Such a mess  But I’m glad to hear none of your stuff got wet at least. Are the bottoms and legs of your furniture still good or did they get caught in the flood?

Yes, very glad it was the incoming water and not the outgoing :poop: I think everything has sufficiently dried but the guys called this afternoon to say they were stuck at another job and it would be tomorrow  so another night of this but hopefully they'll come do their readings and give the all clear and take away these machines!

The furniture seems alright, we were quick to move everything as soon as we woke up and were drying everything off as we went and placing it in positions it could dry if needed.

Like, I said, so many ways it really could've been bad and I'm trying to just focus on that to keep me from getting too frustrated.

I hope they were able to come and clear all the fans and stuff out of there for you today :)

alas my friends, they are still here... I cannot imagine this place hasn't dried out by now... when I got home yesterday the thermostat in my house read 90! I called and threw a bit of a fit and they said to turn them off for a few hours and turn them on again before we went to bed. Which we did but yesterday was sunny and warm, today it's rained all day and has gotten cold and they're saying might even get some snow tomorrow. Sadly when they came this morning they said they still wanted to keep them running til tomorrow. Part of me just wonders if it's cause it rained today, if they came yesterday like they were supposed to they would've maybe gotten Sahara dessert readings  crossing all my fingers and toes tomorrow will be the day! That will be a whole week of these things running!

Poor poor Gingerbread!! I'm so sorry you are having to deal with that! Unfortunately these things take time. You don't want to leave any trace of moisture in there because the Smooze will want to take over. Will your insurance company pay for you to stay in a hotel or anything? I hope you get back to normal soon, sending pony hugs your way.

That sucks! I'm sorry to hear it Gingerbread. :(

so far things are moving along in the right direction, claim submitted and approved, awaiting deposit and then it'll just be on us to get quotes, get a contractor hired and get to it. Which honestly now that everything is dry and all the blowers and stuff are gone, I don't even care if that takes a while. I can at least use my stuff again and live in my spaces. It's in disarray and kinda ugly for the time being but it's functional again and still better than last week's drying out faze. Besides, I don't plan to entertain again til Easter so I got plenty of time LOL

Yays!! If you need help with any kitchen design planning let me know ;). I know cabinets and countertops like the back of my hand. I'm glad that part is over with.

When the time comes @OctoberMoon I might take you up on it! I have way more kitchen-y things than I have kitchen! But I like to be prepared to make anything so even though I only use a springform pan probably twice a year, of course I need it in multiple sizes LOL Right now my bottom cabinets where all the baking stuff is, is like a cross between Tetris and Jenga

You are not alone in cabinet Tetris. My mother and I have been doing a deep de-clutter and downsizing of our home and it’s been a task. I feel for you.

Be sure to share lots of pictures when things are “back to normal” for you guys!

I'm not afraid to share, the good, the bad, and the not-that-pretty LOL

So my kitchen is still a bit out of sorts since the flood. Usable but still in progress with repairs. Biggest hassle has just been finding where my infrequently used stuff ended up. When we were rushing to move everything out of the wet areas we were just piling it anywhere and I haven't had the time to sort it better for the long term until everything is done.

But birthdays don't wait.

My first "project" post flood was a cake for my lil'bro.
I'm the oldest of 3, and my 2 little brothers are 9 and 10 yrs younger than me. I liked baking even as a little Gingerbread, and I remember my little brother having his first B-day and being appalled that my parents weren't planning to really do anything *this was back before Instagram and smash cakes* people just didn't really do much for birthdays their kids were too young to remember or participate in. I wasn't having it though, I insisted we at least needed a cake! So I baked one, it was probably from a box mix and not much ado but a tradition was born. For over 30 years I have made my brothers their B-day cakes each year. As a teen I really got into it, I would do all sorts of themes around whatever things they were into at the time, wrestling, peace frogs, Universal Monsters, hippie, Lady Gaga, horror movies, there was Cinderella one year LOL I wish I had pictures of all of them! Some were better than others but they were all made with love ;) as they got older the themes fell to the wayside but I was informed the themes are missed and frosting and sprinkles just won't do so sometimes I oblige. Truth be told I hate decorating. I love baking but decorating is just tedious to me, and a waste of time cause you're just gonna eat it LOL

This was a milestone B-day so I'll indulge a theme challenge. My lil' bro is still a big Goosebumps fan so he asked me to do this on his cake.

sure, no prob. I got that... BUT this is the vegan brother. Anyone else, I would've rolled it outta some fondant cut the shapes and laid it on top, nice and smooth. I know there are vegan fondant recipes out there but I wasn't ready to get into experimenting with that so decided to go with "not-butter"cream frosting and just frost the pattern on. Now, lil' bro has been vegan for several years and when it comes to cooking, I think I've adapted really well, but the baking is still a challenge sometimes. I have a handful of decent baked goods but I've yet to achieve a truly, high, fluffy cake like you get with traditional ingredients. They taste good, but it's just not the same. I'm still working towards mastering it but IMO it's either too moist and wants to break easily or when I adjust is too flat and not as soft. Given the 2, I prefer too moist. Which is where I was with this guy. They came out beautiful but when I turned them out they got ugly! Trust me when I say this cake is held together with frosting and prayer  thank god for crumb coating! I am honestly surprised the end result came out as well as it did. But nothing some strategic frosting and an hour in the fridge couldn't fix.

The vegan frosting is also a challenge. The plant based fats seem to have a lower melting point which results in a looser frosting and more whipped like texture. They can be quite delicious but not the easiest to achieve a really smooth frosted look. But hey, I did my best and considering I dislike the decorating part most, was working with a uncooperative cake and did it all at 10pm after working all day I'll call it acceptable... especially since it tasted good which in the end is all that really matters cause you're eating it not keeping it to look at! Although I couldn't help but take some liberties with the sprinkles ;) The "G" just had to be bumpy!

That’s so cute that you were like no way, my bro needs a cake! And just did it ^_^ and the goosebumps one looks awesome (he’s got good taste :) I still like watching the old show at Halloween)
Strange that there are parents who basically ignore the first birthdays though, never knew that
