toys

yeah bratz seem to be extremely popular, the next barbie..so to say...but more hip looking, more of this generation, i guess.
but here in east tennessee mlp's seem to do pretty well. i see alot of little girls playing with them and when i worked at an elementary school last year, the little girls there, had mlp clothes and napkins, and lunch boxes, and i would talk to them, and they were absolutely in love with mlp's! so i do think that the majority of the mlp sales do come from collectors though, simply because they resemble the g1's in my opinion. which is why i never got into the g2's. but little girls are getting them too! but i wouldnt worry. i think g3's will be out for a while.

On this board, where supposedly everyone is meant to play nice and not offend other people, heaven *forbid* someone mention The B-Word without streams of insults and curse words flooding from many people's posts. People can't just be satisfied saying "I wouldn't buy them for my child", they have to rant about OMG-LIPS this and OMG-HIPS that and OMG-PROSTITOTS the other.

If you think it gets bad here, you should hear the comments from the American Girl forums! Obviously AGs are a whole different ballpark from Bratz, but I think it's possible to see the beauty in both.

Seriously, though, I get tired of all the Bratz and Barbie bashing too. But what are you going to do?

My nieces LOVE the G3 ponies -- as hard as I've tried to get them into Strawberry Shortcake, all they want are PONIES PONIES PONIES! Not that I'm complaining, it gives me a great excuse to play with them! ;)

I completely agree that having the cartoon makes the toys more enjoyable -- heck, I remember watching Jem as a kid and wanting all the dolls. :) When I gave my nieces "A Charming Birthday" they practically wore the tape out watching it (then I had to find them a Kimono and a Rainbow Dash so they'd have all the characters on the tape) and they love to re-enact the various scenes.

Bratz and ponies are not concurrents as far as I'm concerned. I think Bratz and Barbie used to have fierce competition, but I think they now both have their own place. Bratz is just one more realm of today's toy industry, if you ask me.

There will be children that like Barbies, children that like ponies and children that like Bratz. And some will like all of the former named. It's not like evey child seeing a Bratz doll commercial will automatically be talked into collection them instead of ponies. The choice of toys still depends on the child's personality. Perhaps a minor part is related to the 'what's hot in school today' aspect, but that differs every season as well. (And the rest ought to be corrected with common pony corrupting parenting. >D)

Seriously, though, I get tired of all the Bratz and Barbie bashing too. But what are you going to do?

Fold your hands over your ears and run around singing 'Nah nah nah I can't hear you!' perhaps?
Bratz- I don't even collect them myself, yet I like some of the dolls I see. Yes, we know they are prostitutes to some of you, much like the moon is made out of cheese to some of us. What I'd like to know is why people are so frustrated they have to stoop to a level of a common 5th grader when giving their opinion? I second Sharnofshade's post. There are other ways.

My sister hates brats dolls. She does like My Scene, but would trade anything for her ponies. She loves the G1 ponies, and because all her friends saw my cllection, they too now think it's cool to keel collecting thruhg middle school.

So if the die out it won't be because of a bratz doll.

mlp's

well i agree too, that having a cartoon promotes the mlp's better, but not only that....hasbro should do more advertising like more consistent commercials, to help promote the ponies. my hubby was talking about that the other day...he said "you know one thing i dont understand is how my little pony is doing so good, and hasbro doesnt even advertise them. it has to be collector's buying them, cause kids dont know they exist unless they go to the store and see them on the shelves."
which is true...so hasbro just needs to get off their butts and advertise mlp's more. more commercials, and put a cartoon on saturday mornings, for the kids...and for us collector's too...lol!

I don't have kids yet (I'm 21 and I was REALLY young when the ponies first came out), but I wouldn't let them have Bratz dolls either. Those things make me twitch, and the My Scene barbies are just as bad. They turned what was a fun fashion doll theme into something far too old for young girls.

Little girls aren't allowed to stay little for very long anymore. I'm hoping my kids will be able to stay kids for as long as they want.

Anyway, to get back on topic, the G3s seem to be doing just fine. I had to wait nervously at Target while a little girl decided which pony she wanted, because there was only one Fluttershy left. She chose some other pony and I grabbed Fluttershy. Kids seem to really like them! :)

Well I think that depends on the child's parents. Some people are obsessed with making their 6 or 7 year old daughter look like a fashion show winner. So I agree it's wrong for people to force fashion dolls - ANY fashion doll - on young kids that are not ready for it. When I was a kid, I liked Jem (but mostly because of the theme song, lol) but I disliked Barbies because they felt too grown up for me. They just were odd to me. I kept feeling this way until I was 11 or 12 years of age. On the other hand, I knew girls my age that loved to play with Barbies as early as age 6. Earrings, pumps, dresses, make up? Those things were foreign to me. So I guess what I'm saying is it really, really depends on the kid. If a kid chooses a doll to play with- fine. I don't care if it's a Bratz or a Barbie, it's all the same to me. Some kids like to pretend to be grown up and those dolls allow them to do it. I don't see the difference between a kid pretending to be a n adult using a Bratz or Barbie as a 'vehicle' or a kid pretending she's a secretary working in her dad's office? I saw Barbie commercials all the time. They couldn't convince me. (In fact my loathing grew till a point I would play and ignore those commercials instead of watching them, lol.) Santa soon learned to bring ponies instead.

So that's why I think ponies are definitely safe. :) If they phaze out, it's most likely because Hasbro's inspiration died after releasing the 14th version of Pinkie Pie. XD

I agree with thirteen 13 spiders say's .

Hasbro needs to do more advertiesing of the mlp G3's to get girl's to buy more of them. :)
instead girl's are just walking into a toy shop just seeing them on the shelves. and then buying them off the shelves .
which is good. but when G1 MLP's came out in different desighn's and different poeses. Hasbro did more advertiesing of them. when ever a new pony set came out or was about to be releast in to the toy shops their was more advertiesing of them then.

and I have not seen a MLP G3 advertisment on TV since last 2004 Christmas here in the UK .
the only advert Ive seen since MLP G3's last advert. is the Brats doll's advert and also polly pocket and others .

also my mum the other day was agreeing with me on the fact that MLP G3's. might not last untill some time next year 2006. I think Hasbro will discontinue MLP g3's soon may be not yet but soon i think due to the more popularity of the brats dolls .
so we should not hold hopes up for G3's sticking around more than another 2 years because that i don't think will happen just my opinion.

today's kids have not lached on to MLP's. as well as we did back in the 80's and bassicly they know little of what a true MLP is.
unlike we know what a true MLP is as it's the G1's.
but they don't and so al they see is MLP's just beeing ponies to them nothing less.

ok they look simular to the G1's but they are totally different to G1's in size. and the new desighn's and colours that they come in.

I think hasbro personaly should of brought back out the real MLP G1 pony moulds. and bring those ponies back in to life in new desighn's and wild colours and things.
because then the kids of today can latch on to them better. than what Hasbro have done of late which is the G3's. which are doing well at the moment with the yonger kids and the slightly older ones to. but when they brought out the G2's which flopt badly as know one was that intrested in them. and also they looked nothing like a MLP at all.

if Hasbro had done things differently like first of all if they want the kids of today to buy MLP's. then Hasbro should of thought about first bringing out the old G1 moulds. and uesing them first. so Kids get a better sense of what a MLP is in all their poeses and desighn's and different shapes and stuff. and all those new exsotic colours they ues to do the ponies in.
and then bring out the G2's later on in the following years. after the old mlp G1 moulds had finished beeing uesed then when the G2's were finished with bring strait out the new MLP's the G3 moulds and then kids by now would of been totaly latched on to them properly .
instead of Hasbro waiting years later after the G1 moulds had finished. they could of just carrid on but with the new moulds added on to the back end of the old MLP moulds which would of been far better than what they have done.

iam just saying this as this is my opinion on MLP's.

but things could of been better for Hasbro if they had done MLP's in this way i said above which was to bring out the old mlp's first so today's kids get a better sense of a MLP's .

i do like and collect G3's now as well as the G1's and so love both but nothing lasts forever you know and i know that Hasbro will stop MLP G3's soon .

i hope every one has enjoyed this discution topic and i would like a MOD to now close this chapter off for me please. thanks for your comments.

Interesting! My passionly pony-hating mom gave a similar date when I talked to her about the new ponies the other day. She said 2006-2007 to be the maximum. I certainly hope this is not an unconscious psychic vision of a lot of people? :?

I partially agree. Barbie, for instance, has been around since 1960 and she has seen many body and face mold updates through the years. Toys change, that's a reason the toy industry stays alive. BUT. I never understood why in the world Hasbro did not produce an exclusive G1 line next to the G3s? If you take a look at the Barbie shelves, you occasionally see an old Silkstone Barbie remake or a totally new Barbie with the Silkstone face mold. If Mattel can do it, why not Hasbro?

I never believed Hasbro lost the rights to the molds and a while ago I read the proof right here on this board. In some convention or the other, a rep told they had in fact all the rights to the old molds.

I am not into economics and I'm not a marketer, but as a collector I would certainly have done things very differently with MLP. (I guess we all would have, lol.) I think the designs on the G3s are very repetitive compared to the old line. Their creators will always been know as 'the dtrue creators' to me because of their creative and original product design. This small group of people made MLP what it is today, they created the whole imaginative world around them. I think it's that what the G3 line lacks, if anything. MLP used to stand out among toys. It used to be something that nothing could compare to. It still has some of the uniqueness and magic to it, but they can't beat the old ones IMHO.

Personally, I think a line based on the G1 molds would have sold. And looking back, if I would have to choose between six years of G3s and two or three short years of remade G1s I think I would still voted for the last option. I still would have liked that best. But if kids today would have? Beats me. All I know is the product design of G1 breathes quality and uniqueness neither G2 or G3 can beat. (Just my personal opinion. I'm not saying this to bash any of the other lines, as I love and collect those too.)

What's the logic behind this 'G1 molds would sell better to today's kids' thing? If anything, the new molds are better aimed at modern kids, since they are more anime-ised, which is the most popular style for children's toys at the moment.

Kids today don't remember the G1 line for the most part (I'm 18, and I only remember the very very last years of the G1 line). todays '3+' market would have no idea about the G1 molds, and I can't see any reason those molds would sell better than the current G3s.

And really, the average (non-collector) parent isn't going to go "OMG, I remember those molds! I used to play with those!" They're going off the brand name, which hasn't changed. I doubt any are refusing to buy the G3s because the mold changed.

And for all the complaining people do about how uncreative the g3's are (never seeming to compare the first three years of G3s to the first three years of G1s - trust me, there's *much* more variation in the G3 line if you take the timeframe into account), collectors are still buying them. And will still buy them. I doubt any of the hardcore G1 collectors would convert just if Hasbro used the old molds, and everyone else seems to be buying them up regardless of the new molds (I personally think the new molds are *way* better. G1s win on nostalgia points, but G3s win on not looking like sleepy pig monsters).

Also, I can't see why Hasbro would drop a line that is not only turning a large profit, but actually *greatly exceeding all expectations they had for the line*. I mean, what, do people think Hasbro is going to go "Man, this new pony line is bringing in too much money. Time to stop producing them. Screw the hundreds of thousands of dedicated collectors, screw the successful chunk being taken out of the children's market. Let's make something no one wants, instead. Maybe then it won't be so darn successful"?

And also, thanks to everyone that backed me on the Bratz-slagging issue. That's been bugging me for ages, and it's nice to know other people feel the same way.

This is pretty much the whole reason why I don't collect them anymore.

When I first saw them in the store, I bought a bunch because it was the first time I'd seen MLP back in years and years. That initial "OMG PONY!" shock nabbed me Kimono and a number of others from the original release.

After that, I bought one or two who I thought were cute, but for now I've pretty much stopped. To me, it is more worth my money to buy the G1s than the G3s. I'm not a big fan of the G3s for the most part. They just don't look or feel the same to me. In a way, they feel like cheap plastic knockoffs, even though they're not. I'm much happier getting a vintage pony than picking up a new one from Walmart or Target.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad they're coming out with ponies again, because I DO buy one or two once in awhile. And I don't think production will stop anytime soon. I just like the G1s a whole lot better.

Yep, I asked the Hasbro reps at the San Diego Comic Con and they were very definite on this. They have the rights to all the old molds. :)

I would like to see a line of G1 molded toys aimed at collectors . . . They would have to be pricier, because there are way less collectors than little girls, but I'd still love to see it, especially if it were old favorites in new molds--like Bow-Tie in the sitting mold! Or what if they had a "nostalgia dual pack" with a G1 and a G3 sharing the same name (like G1 Butterscotch and G3 Butterscotch)?

I think it would be cool. :)

I don't see much difference between the old and new molds, really. The G3s have bigger heads and bigger eyes and are slightly smaller, but otherwise are nearly identical to G1s (except the babies.)

Nostalgia packs would be awesome. Of course, now I'm picturing them on th racks beside the action figures I buy and that's just weird.

Ah, but if you look at my entire post, I was talking about parents buying for their kids in that section you've quoted, not collectors buying for themselves. I doubt parents would be saying 'these aren't the mold I like, so I won't buy it for my child'. They'd be saying 'I remember playing with those, my kid would like them too!'

So I wasn't saying that lots of people don't like G1s better (because of course, they do). I was just saying that from Hasbro's point of view, the newer molds cover the target audiences well enough.

none

I would prefer G1's my self beacuse they are better made. and look like they are worth money. which they are on the second market. and also when they did come out in the shops all those years ago. :)

I also collect G1's in fact I have now over proberly 20 ponies in all of G1's which I had to start from scratch again after what had happened to them years back in the late 80's.

when I collected these years ago to start with I only had 16 G1's but they had hair cut's. some of them did and ened up being thown out .
my friend was to blame for this as she told me to do it when I did not want to. :(

so that's why I said above that I had to start from scratch again. so I have beaten my old collecting record of 16 G1 ponies. and that was when I had them.

I think may still have some. some where in my loft or Attic as people say.
and I think they will be the ones that did not have their hair cuts luckerly.

any way since Ive started collecting the G1's from scratch as I said above I think I may have over 20 ponies so far so ive beaten my old collecting record of 16 G1 ponies from years back when I first collected them.

I stared again collecting G1's gain due to me missing having their cumpany in my room. and now I also collect G3's yes they are cheep. and proberly not going to last as long as G1's did. but the G3's are quite nice and I am not sure as to how many of these I have at the moment.
as I have not counted them yet as Iam still buying them.
I am hoping that Hasbro come out with the Unicorn G3's soon because Iam saving a space for those as well . :D

but any way I do prefer the the G1's in my book as Iam all way's trying to win them off Ebay.but thats when they put the good ponies Iam after on their . :D

the latest pony I wone from ebay was Sparkler unicorn pony and she's lovley looking to. :D

so I think Hasbro should bring out the old G1's again and do another line or 2 of these . 8)
